    Do you know how common social anxiety disorder is? it is estimated that one in ten of the American population suffer from this problem.

    Some people may refer to it as shyness but generally speaking it is much more intense for the sufferer than being a little shy.we all suffer from mild anxiety during certain high stress situations such as having to deliver a speech to strangers or attending an important interview.For the social anxiety victim these situations may cause intense reactions such as nausea ,palpitations,difficulty breathing to name just a few.

    For some sufferers the fears can manifest themselves even in everday social situations that most of take in our stride such as shopping or talking on the phone as they constantly have feelings of being inadequate and that they are being watched and judged by any person they may come into contact with.This can impact life in many ways and may prevent the formation of realtionships with other people leading to increasing isolation from the outside world.

    It is important to deal with social phobias or anxieties as soon as it begins to have an effect on normal life as failure to act may lead to more complicated and entrenched  anxiety requiring the attention of professional counsellors and even drug therapy.

    Most professionals agree that the cause is often linked to the individuals genetic background or some traumatic event in childhood,but mas also be instigated by any highly embarassing or difficult event in later life.

    Fortunately there is much that can be done to assist people to overcome social anxiety,treatments range from self help books and CD’s,hypnosis, relaxation and breathing techniques to cognitive bahavioural counselling which has proved succesful for many sufferers.There are also several medications which may be prescribed by doctors to deal with anxiety problems for more difficult cases.
