Did you know that 95% of reported cases of tennis elbow come from non-tennis players? The majority of general public are under the impression that tennis elbow is a result of playing too much tennis, simply because of the term "tennis elbow". Nothing could be further from the truth!
The medical term for tennis elbow is lateral epicondylitis simply because it affects the outside of the elbow bone called the lateral epicondyle. Without getting too technical, damage occurs to a tendon that joins the extensor muscles of the forearm to upper arm bone(humerus).
Tennis elbow usually affects people between the ages of 35-55. It starts out innocent enough as a small dull ache and discomfort on the outside of your elbow. At first the pain may only strike every other day or when you are lifting something heavy. The injury usually progresses over time to the point where just grasping your gripping your coffee mug becomes agonizing. The suffering and pain then gets so bad that it becomes debilitating to the point where now it interferes with your job, career, daily chores, hobbies, activities and life.
There are specific groups of people who are more likely to suffer from tennis elbow simply due to the fact that their careers, jobs or hobbies puts them into the high risk catergory. Such occupations and careers that entail the following activities are extremely susceptible to developing tennis elbow:
* People engaged in Manual Labor

There is a strong co-relation between the type of activity a person engages in and tennis elbow, since manual labor involves lifting of heavy weights, or puts more than ‘normal’ stress on the wrists, arm and elbow, people such as carpenters and plumbers are usually a high risk category for tennis elbow.
In addition tasks that involve long durations of wrist and elbow movement/rotation or having a tight grip on an object such as(innocently enough) a paint brush can lead to tennis elbow.
Apart from manual labourers, there are also weight lifters that are a part of this high risk category, especially professional weight lifters that have been lifting weights since a very young age, make themselves susceptible to tennis elbow.
* Athletes
Tennis elbow is called so because, tennis players were one of the first group of people who reported the problem, this does not mean that only tennis players are afflicted by tennis elbow, however people who are engaged in racket sports like badminton are also equally at risk.
Athletes like golfers and those competing in more weight oriented sports like the shot put and the discuss throw have also been known to be affected by tennis elbow. Essentially athletes are susceptible to wear and tear of the forearm, and elbow - especially those that require extensive wrist movement are more likely to develop tennis elbow. Since certain activities are more likely to affect a particular part of the elbow or arm, the symptoms experienced by people suffering from tennis elbow also vary, where as pain on the outside of the elbow is a common symptom other than that the, symptoms can vary from shooting pain in the forearm, to pain while lifting weights or pain during simple chores or maintenance activities that involves using a wrench or screwdriver.
Depending on the particular tendon group that is damaged and other deciding factors, differential diagnosis of tennis elbow is divided into categories like:
- anconeus compartment syndrome
- bursitis
- cervical radiculopathy
- radio-humeral joint dysfunction
- lateral epicondyle avulsion
- musculocutaneus nerve entrapment
- non-union of radial neck fracture
- osteoarthritis
- posterior interosseous syndrome
- posterolateral rotatory instability
- radial nerve tension
- radial tunnel syndrome
- rheumatoid arthritis
- strained lateral collateral ligaments
- snapping plicae syndromeOther high risk activities involve:
* using a computer mouse (especially if you have poor arm and neck posture)
* using a computer keyboard
* using vibrating equipment, such as jackhammers, power saws, paint guns, etc…
* using scissors, shears, knives
* gardening
* manual occupations that involve repetitive twisting and lifting of the wrist - including
plumbing, bricklaying and use of a screwdriver
* playing musical instruments such as the violinWhew…that was a long list!
Well, the good news is that I too suffered from tennis elbow but am a Survivor! I suffered from tennis elbow for 7 years, and spent a little over $780 on physical therapy, anti-inflammatories specialized rehab exercise equipment, massage therapy and acupuncture… all with no lasting results…

I couple of days ago, I wrote about how sick and tired I am of all the weight loss diets, gimmicks and pills you see advertised every where…
…and I got a TON of mail from people who feel the same way…

of their latest greatest flab-building gut-expanding “food.”On the other side we have one “miracle” diet product after another, which, by the way, do NOTHING to help you lose weight and EVERYTHING to make you feel so discouraged you just want to give up and go pig out on more junk food!
Aren’t you sick and tired of all this bull#$%&????
That’s why I have vowed to NEVER EVER go on another diet…
…because diets do not work!
What’s the good of losing 20 pounds only to gain back 30?
I’m convinced that the ONE and ONLY thing that does work is to IGNORE everyone who is trying to make a profit by telling you what to eat and what supplements to take…
